At the annual meeting of the Otago Patriotic Association it was_ repotted that since its inception £125,732 had been spent in cash to keen returned soldiers and dependents. The vital statistics for Hawera for the month ended May 31, were as follows, the numbers given in parentheses being the figures for the corresponding month of last year:—-Births' 24 (20), deaths 5 (s)’ marriages 9 (7). As notified bv advertisement, the popular invitation dances of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club are to be held again this year. The first is setdown fo r Monday, June 22, in the Savoy, and at this gathering trophieß and certificates won during the past: season will be presented Practically all parts of the North Island are represented at the' North Island championship dog trials, to' be commenced at Gisborne on Tuesday. The entries received exceed those of the North Island championship meeting of recent years, there bein<r fortytwo in the long head, thirty-seven in the short head, and forty-four in the huntawav.

Business changes in Hawera have been fairly frequent of late. In this issue Mr F. Silson announces that he has disnosed of his business to Mr J. A. Dalgetty, late of Auckland. Mr Silson will not be leaving Hawera for a while, his future movements being uncertain. Mr W. J. Woollett, late of Palmerston North, has arrived in Hawera to take over Mr M. Kineton Parkes’s business. '■

By the courtesy of Mr J. W. Collins, of the Department of Industries and Commerce, the management of the South Taranaki Winter Show is : to have the use of 100 photographs of. exhibits at the 1924 session of the Empire Exhibition. These include some first-class examples of window-dressing, and will be in position in sufficient time to allow local business men a. private view before the show opens. The department has also kindly granted the loan of two original drawings, eight feet by five, symbolising the developmen of New Zealand trade and intended for display at the Dunedin Exhibition. i ’ The Tawhiti Hotel, at Waipiro Bay, East Coast, a large two-storey modern structure of twenty rooms overlooking the ocean, was completely destroyed by fire with its contents at a late hour on Saturday night. Nine boarders were in the hotel, but they aR escaped safely. The property was owned by Mr. J. F. Pettie, of Te Araroa, the licensee being Mrs. McCullough. The insurances are: New Zealand Company, £3OOO o n the building, £6OO on the electric light plant,. £2OO on the, engine-house and wash-house, and £l5O 'on Mrs. McCullough’s piersona; furniture ; United Company, £IOOO on the building; Commercial Union, £BOO- on the furniture and- £l5O on stores. , In continuation of the action against Young by the Native Trustee under the West Coast Settlements Reserves Act, 1913, before the; Supreme Court at New Plymouth, ' the defendant stated that the property was worth about £ls -an acre; but if cleared and fenced, the value would be from £2O to £22. It, would cost ful'y ' £7 ahacre to clear the farm, but at preseiit the stumps were too green for stump--ing to be satisfactory. Evidence 'wasgiven that, the district Government land, valuer placed the value at- £I6OO, but: the native valuers stated £I4OO was a fair estimate. The district valuet reduced his amount by £175, and dev fendant paid the other £25. The court then adjourned, counsel .agreeing t<i take further evidence for the defence, before the registrar, while '-egal nrgijr ment will probably be taken before- the Full Court at AVellington.
