VALEDICTORY.
REV. AND MRS. E. N. GORING
As a farewell to the Rev. and Mrs. E. N. Goring, who are shortly, leaving to take, up duties at Mt. Eden, Auckland, a social was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, last evening. Mr. F. AY. Horne r presided, and among those present were representatives of the other denominations in Hawera. The function opened with devotional exercises,
The chairman referred to the two and a quarter years that the Baptist Church had been in existence in Hawera. He looked back upon, that period as one of lull'd work, many joys and some disappointments. Mr. Goring had given a. fine ideal of Christian teaching had shown strong fortitude, and though he: had experienced discouragements, had never failed. He was indeed a zealous messenger of the Scripture, and he was also an ardent lover of sport, _lle, the speaker, was. indeed sorry .to lose liis pastor, and Mrs. Goring had earned for liprself a place in the heart of all the people. It gave him great pleasure to hand Mr. Goring a. small token of the esteem in which lie was held by all the members of tlie church. lie then handed Mr. Goring a cheque. Mrs. Hutchison, on behalf of the Baptist Women’s. Missionary Union, spoke ef the love and affection in which they all held Airs. Goring, for during her period in Hawera. she had found a place.in the hearts of all, and it was with deep regret that they were there to bid her farewell. She had great pleasure in presenting her with an umbrella, and a serviette ring for her little daughter. The Rev. H. W. Monaghan spoke of the good work Mr. Goring bad clone as secretary of the local Ministers’ Association, and that it was due a greatextent. to his work that such splendid fellowship existed between the members. As Air Goring was going to a larger centre, lie would have greater scope for his capabilities, and he was certain to prosper. He wished them both the best of success in their new sphere. Air L. A. Bone, president of the Prohibition League, eulogised on Air Goring’s activities in the cause of prohibition, and it was a great blow to the local organisation to lose him, especially when they were embarking on another campaign. He wished both Mr and Mrs Goring much happiness and success.
Mrs Haywood expressed the regret of the AVomen’s Prayer Circle at losing All's Goring. On their behalf she handed her a bouquet. The Rev. Air Lascelles, organiser of the General Baptist Union, spoke in glowing terms of the goqdfellowship which he' saw existed between the ministers of Hawera, and thought this bore a silent testimony of unity in the desire to extend the kingdom of God.
The Rev. Mr Goring, on rising to reply, said he had always managed to get on splendidly with his secretary and the church' people generally, His experience in Hawera had. been his first as a pastor, and he felt that if any great success had been achieved hy him it was . due to the co-operation and association with the. people of Hawera. He was leaving the town with a great deal of love and regret, and hoped, that the future of the church would, be bright and prosperous. Airs Go-ring thanked the,speakers for their expressions of goodwill, arid hoped that some day she should see- all her old friends again. During the evening songs were sung by Misses McCarthy. Gray and Mill.?and Mr. Moore, and a recitation given by Mi-ss A.. Brough. Miss Spence acted as accompanist. A vote- .of thanks was tendered to the performers. A dainty supper was served hy the ladies and was much, appreciated.
