MARKETING SUBSIDY
BRITISH MERCHANTS HOSTILE
OPPOSED TO CONTROL BOARDS
BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received May 27, 12.50 p.m. LONDON, May 26. In addition to the opposition of the. British producers to tlie proposed mil- - ion subvention to assist in the marketing of Dominion products, there is growing comment in business circles that Australian and New ’Zealand producers are increasingly resorting to the creation of boards to control prices and deliveries of goods. This is believed also to he one of the grounds of criticism of the preferential subvention. It is hinted that this view has arisen at the discussion of the Imperial Economic Committee, where it is suggested that they cannot have it both ways. Lending merchants lumd'ing Australian and New Zealand imports informed the Australian Press Association that' producers would do better if they devoted tfieir energies to the perfection of methods of growing, grading and packing, and leave the selling to the firms who have been doing it for many years and have a long connection among buyers. One large buyer of dairy produce minted out that there must always be a keen struggle between the buyer and the sel'er. The former naturally wants to buy the goods as cheap as possible and the seller wants to make the utmost. The result of this competition must depend mninly upon supply nnd demand. . Another merchant regards the desire for control by producers as a heritage from wartime food control, to which British consumers submitted, for it had the effect of stabilising prices, hut now it is impossible to stabilise the prices of perishable products, which are arriving at irregular intervals in variable quantities, not only from the colonies, but from many much nearer countries. —A, and N.Z.
