BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. WANGANUI, May 27. Lightering operations in connection with the Cyrena commenced this morning in beautiful, weather and perfect conditions. The steamer John has heen brought from New Plymouth, and has been commissioned to assist in the lightering of the stranded steamer. WANGANUI, May 26. The position of the stranded Cyrena is unchanged to-night. Unloading oper. ations will commence to-morrow morning. The authorities anticipate that the streamer v T ill be refloated without much difficulty. The plight of the Cyrena is serious, but is not as yet considered, hopeless. The vessel has 14 feet of water in the holds, but the engine room is dry. The weather is calm and a start has been made to unload tlie case oil cargo. When thai; is completed an accurate survey of the damage will be possible, and it. will be known whether the vessel can be patched and towed off. The vessel first struck at a point where there was believed to be a clear three feet beneath her hull, and theobsfrrue; t-ion is surmised to be a sunken log. The initial injury was so serious that the- steamer had to be beached to prevent her sinking in the fairway. The Terawhiti has arrived and is now standing by.
