“AMAZING MILESTONE.’ ’ Eon DON, May 11. Paying-a tribute to the recent wireless experiments of Mr C. D. Maclur,an, of Svclney, and Mr Er. J. Simnionds, of Buckinghamshire, the Sunday Observer states that they constitute an amazing milestone in wireless development, which, in conjunction with the experiments of Reinartz, the American, who found the shortest wave lengths most effective at midday, shou’d lead to important discoveries as to the sun’s- effect in ! lowering the Heaviside layer. This should tend towards the elimination of long wave lengths in daytime. On several occasions recently Mr Madurean (2CM) and Mr Simmonds have exchanged messages in Morse in day time on. the extremely low wave ength of-20 metres. At present they are conducting various experiments on ‘2O metres, and it is likely that later on a still lower wave length will be employed. Tests have been made in America on five metres. The Heaviside '•ayer referred to in the cab’e relates to" a. theorv propounded by the late Lord Heaviside, that above the atmosphere exists a medium which reflects towards the earth wireless waves that strike it.
