ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
JULIAN CUP. Under conditions that were all against a good exhibition of football, the first Julian Cup fixture of the season was played between Manaia and Hawera at Manaia on Saturday, and resulted in" a win for Manaia by one goal to nil. The following were the teams: Manaia: Buck!, Muggeridge, Betterldge, Parsons, O’Connor, Butler, Green, - Corbett, Muggeridge, Kimberley and Butt. Hawera.: Pettett, Bell, Beare, Dancer, Forbes, Leach, Dalgleish, Moloney, Galloway, I. Campbell, and Spice. ' Manaia kicked off, the half being sent to the left wing and returned by Dancer, who sent well up the field for Campbell to send in a shot, which Bucld saved well at the expense of a corner, the kick being taken by Dalgleisli and promptly cleared hv Muggeridge. Hawera came hack again, hut could not make any impression on the Manaia defence, which was playing a good game. The half then came out to Parsons, who sent along the left wing, the Hawera hack missing his kick. The- way was clear for Muggeridge to send in a shot from an angle that should not have deceived the Hawera goalie, who tried to kick the ball: clear whe n his play was to have gone down to it. From the kick off Hawera pressed, Galloway sending jn a shot that Biulrl saved in great style, Spice getting the hall and sending behind. From the goal kick Hawera came on again. Galloway again tested Budd with a great shot which that player saved by turning round the post for a corner. Manaia then had a turn of attacking and were well in the goal area when Leach Slipped iii and saved the situation, sending the hall to the centre, Forbes trying a shot, which was high. From the goal kick, Manaia came away and forced a corner, Pettett saving well. Hawera pressed and forced a corner, which was cleared. Dancer returned the ball, Dalgleish putting in a. shot wide of the posts. From the goal kick Manaia went ahead, Beare who came across the field being glad to kick into touch. Jiist before half time Galloway again caused Budd to make a great save from a fast shot. At half time the score was: .Manaia 1, Hawera.-0. No interval was taken- the toy ms changed round and the game continued. Manaia attacked, the hall, being sent behind. From the goal kick Hawera went ahoajd, a good clearance b.v Betteridge checking them. After a period of midfield play .Hawera forced a corner, which was sent, behind. Manaia now began to have more of the game than at any time before, and Pettett was hard pressed to save his goal from a mix-up in the goal mouth. I t was now raining heavily. I lie Manaia players, adapting themselves to the conditions better than Hawera, continued to have the better of the game, forcing a corner, Pettett saving well. *A goal kick to Hawera was returned. -Manaia was trying hard to increase its score. A period of straggling mid-field play saw. the finish of the game, Manaia. winning a poor game hv 1 to 0.
As far as could ho seen there were no players of outstanding merit, the following being the pick on a day that it. Was to play good football. For Manaia: —Buclci, Betteridge, and the two Muggeridges; for Hawera. Leach and Forbes wore the pick. Mr. George Mitchell controlled the game in his usual capable manner.
A word to soccer players may nut be out of place here. The association game is a team game, not, of individuals. The sooner inside forwards realise this fact and let the wing men do their share of attacking, the sooner they will have the pleasure of scoring goals from centres that will he put across to them. Hawera, note this! AIANAIA SOCCER CLUB. The second meeting of the Alanaia Soccer Club this season, was held in the iFire Station on Saturday last.
