WANGANUI, May 23
Much rain fell at Wanganui on Thursday and Friday, hut the .Jockey Club were favoured with a line day lor the conclusion of their winter meeting. As was only .to be expected, the race track was heavy, but racing after such rain would have been almost impossible qn 99 per cent, of the courses. The attendance was quite satisfactory. Speculation was good, showing u £SOO increase over the corresponding day of last year. Rowley was installed a good favourite for the Balgownie Hack Handicap, but Euphonium counted o n solid backing too. When the barrier rose Ring Potoa was taken to the front, and led De Luxe, Kilia, and Roosevatp to the four furlong post, at which point Euphonium and Rowley moved up. At the home turn .Ring P'otoa was just in. front of RoAviey and Euphonium, and when in a line tar the winning post Rowley took charge, but a hundred yards from the post Barry brought Euphonium with a good run and won nicely from Rangi Sarto, which also finished well to heat Rowlev.
Admiral Codrington was a bjg tip for the Rata Hack Hurdles, but after having every chance he failed to run into a place. The winner turned up in the novice jumper Trespass, which gelding won pulling up from lionecto, which heat Eonmark by a head, while Askari 'finished fourth. Strong support for Alarie and Black Art allowed Comical, to pay a false price in the May Hurdles, in which event Te Ivawa set a last pace over the first 10 furlongs, his attendants being Otaura Kid, Alarie and Comical. The last-named got to the front about two furlpngs from the finishing point, and won with ridiculous ease from Black Art, which ran on wel) to beat Alarie. Master Peter was entrusted with over double the amount invested on I’u where (second favourite) lor the Grandstand Steeplechase. Bettors were well on the mark, for the pair ran first and second. For a novice over llic country Pinvhcro gave a finished exhibition, going to the lead alter the first four furlongs to win easily from Master Peter, which made up a lot of ground after the last half-mile. Carawoek was a fair third, and Pnssin Through fourth. Fool’s Paradise was a pronounced favourite for the Empire Handicap, from H.ipo and Good Sport. IN hen the tapes rose Ruby Ring began best, and led Megan and Fool’s Paradise out of the straight. Going down the back stretch Megan took charge and led Pronto and Imperial Spark into the straight. Over the last furlong a grefit race took place, victory going to jCool’s Paradise, Which Bent the consistent Imperial Spark by a good neck, with H.ipo a hall-length away third, and Megan a moderate fourth. Dwnn’s pair (Alabama and Beaumont) carried £l6O more than Willow WVii for the Farewell, Hack Handicap, Padonna being the only other runner seriously sunoorted. Willow W'ai was actually first'to begin, hut King Pot and Tvilmerc soon headed him, and a little further on Padonna ran to the lead. As the held raced into the straight, Padonna, Tempean, and Em-
pire Camp were disputing the lead. Once in a line tar the post, several horses appeared on the scene, prominent of which were Willow Wai, Attractive, and llehutai. The last-named appeared to have the race won till a few strides from tlie post, where Attractive, with a good effort, cut Relmt.ai clown to win by a head. Empire Camp and Alabama were next. The gathering concluded with the Winter Oats, in a big. pool Rational and Lady Bentinck were evenly supported from Gaillard and Archeen. When the tapes rose, Lady Bentinck, Kuhio, and Dipso] began Well, but Rational lost many lengths. At tho Imlfni ile post Lady Bentinck lost her place to Lipso] and Kuhio, which pair, with Gaillard, led into the straight. Over the last'furlong Archeen put in a run like that of Thursday, and won very easily from Yomn, which cut Ladv Bentinck out of second, place. Benrnure finished fourth.
