KAPUNI.
SCHOOL AFFAIRS. The Ivapuni School Committee met on Friday evening, when there were present: Messrs L. C. Harrison (chairman), H. A. K. McNae (hon. secretary), K. Shaw, J. McLeod, and H. Knight. Mr A. Lees was also in attendance. Lengthv consideration was . given to the urgent necessity for securing extra accommodation at the school, it being pointed out that whereas the building when taxed to its lull capacity could accommodate only 97 pupils, the average attendance had reached 130. Dissatisfaction was expressed regarding the arrangement to place two classes in the hall, it being considered that such ■ i scheme would entail a division of the Leaching staff and the school children, would incur a certain measure of risk to the chiklren when crossing the road in proceeding to and from the hall, and would also prove greatly inconvenient during the winter months when the hall would he required for various local purposes. Mr Lees was requested to bring the matter to the notice of the head inspector, and urge that steps be taken to. have the school enlarged .so as to make, provision for the full attendance. The opinion was expressed that the committee had a very strong claim, arid that the necessary addition would eventually be .secured. In the meantime it was decided to carry on with the overflow classes in the hall, it being left to the teaching staff to impress upon the children the necessity for exercising caution in order to avoid possible accidents when crossing the road.
Owim* 1 to the large attendance and in consequence the likelihood that the prize funds would prove insufficient to meet all requirements, it was decided to call a public v meeting for the purppes of considering whether the money already in hand should he devoted to securing necessary sanitary improvements at the school.
FOOTBALLERS’ BENEFIT DANCE. Tl* first of a. series of fortnightly dances being conducted by the Kapuni Public Works Football Club was held in the .Kapuni Hall on Friday evening,, when the function took the form of a benefit to Mr J. Christie, a player who was injured during the ,seven-a-side tourney at Manaia and is still confined to hospital. Despite adverse weather conditions and' counter-attractions at Matapn and Manaia, encouraging support was given, the a tendance numbering over 300 dancers. Arranged by the committee under the supervision of Mr C. Stringer, the occasion proved highly enjoyable, the various numbers, affording the maximum of pleasure throughout a lengthy programme. Excellent music was provided by the Mount family orchestra, and Messrs H. Whalen and C. Denman officiated capably as M’s.C. Competitive and novelty dances, added to the general interest. A waltzing competition attracted numerous contstants and necessitated keen, .discrimination on the part of the judge (Mr A. ,E. Winter, Hawera), whose award was finally given to Miss A- and Mr J. Mount, while in a “spot!’ waltz the lucky pair proved to be Mrs Whalen and partner. Suitable trfophies were presented to the respective winners. A dainty table supper was provided, all participants being amply catered for, though as the residt of the committee’s bounty there remained a quantity oi confection si sufficient when submitted to “Dutch” auction by Mr C. Denman, to. realise a sum which materially assisted the object of the dance. Shortlv after 1 a.m. the customary musical honours marked the adjournment of the entertainment which it was announced would be resumed at the following dance, to be held on .Tune 5.
