COMMENTS ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph.—Special co the Star.) WANGANUI, May 21. Much vain fell overnight at Wanganui and the morning broke with, a drizzling rain, which continued till wen on in the day. Despite the light moisture, conditions were not unpleasant, but the weather had an effect on the attendance, whic-h did not reach, that of the* corresponding clay of last year. Although the “tote’’ operated on eight races against seven last year, there was a decline of nearly £'2oo. Considering the rain, the race track wore well. For the first division of the l 1 urn a Hack, Ring Potoa was a. better favourite than Attractive, while Shut-ISye and Gurraghimores carried within a. century of Attractive. Front a good start King Pot immediately shot to the front from Alabama, Attractive and ; Curraghiinore, with Shut-Eye heading the others. King Pot had a useful lead at the straight entrance, but Alabama soon headed him and went on to win by a .short length. / Rangi .Sarto, who beat Ourraghmore, was a neck away, with- King Pot inches away fourth. For the second division of the Puma Hack, Willow Wai was entrusted with nearly twice the amount invested on Rehutai, with Rowley Beaumont and Euphonium also well supported. \Vhen the tapes rose, Riehutai and Euphonium began best, hut Willow Wai was soon in charge ancl opened up a. lead oil three length* on Euphonium. while Tempean ancl Rehutai were most prominent of the other runners. Turning into the striaght, Willow Wai wasi just in front of Euphonium, hut the lastnamed immediately challenged, and although Willow Wai struggled on gamely. Euphonium won nicely from Willow Wai with Tempean a good tnircl, just in, front-of Rowley. The last-named may do better on, Saturday, a, remark which also applies to Willow Wai, should the race- track dry a iittle. Sansalino was slightly better supported than Hautawa in the Hack Steeplechase, Mahia, too,, being well backed. When, the field was despatched Hautawa, Bonibrook. Roaming, Akbar and S-ansa-lino became prominent, but after going half a, mile Bonibrook took charge with, Roaming, Sansalino, Hautawa, Akbar and Maliia. following. There l was little change, till three furlongs from home, whore Sansalino was rushed up to join Bonibrook: However, a faulty jump cost Sansalino a, couple of lengths, and Bonibrook led over the final obstacle, and in the run to, the post, a great, battle took place between Bonibrook and Sansalino, Bonibrook winning by half a head, with. Lady Cornet -i-< lengths away just in front of Blue Hall. At the first jump White Ranger lost his rider and Kafo-rte broke a stine at the hencoop. When the betting ceased on the Wanganui Steeplechase, Master Peter
i was a good favourite, but Dick and ’ Black Art had many admirers. When the field settled down to their long journey, Carawock was the leader from Juki, ‘Black Art and Master Peter. After going half a mile Black Art took charge, with CarawocK, "Master Peter, Landbird and Tuki following. Coming to the stand double Black Art was a. dozen lengths clear of Master Peter, Carawock, Tuki and Passin’ Through. Black Art ran off at the second fence of the double and Master Peter went on in front with Landbird, Carawock. Tuki and Passin’ Through following. There was little alteration till a mile from home, nt which stage Landbird joined Master Peter and the pair entered into a great duel by racing and jumping together till half a mile from home, at which point* Master Peter again drew out from Landbird., on which gelding Bowden was riding a patient race. Two furlongs from the post. Landbird again challenged Master Peter, and drawing away over the last furlong, Landbird won easily from Master Peter, which.was lucky to beat Tuki, a gelding that made up a lot of ground. Carawock was fourth. Comical was made a. level money favourite for the Hack Hurdles, and after being placed behind Taitaiata and Admiral Codrington oveit the first mile, Comical drew out to win very easily from All Wind, which finished on we 1 1 to heat Taitaiata and Admiral Codrington. The last-named should go. well on Saturday. Omaliau was backed for the Century Hurdles as if that event were a certainty for him. and he carried just three times the amount invested on Dubious (second favourite)When the field was despatched, Te Kaivn set as pacemaker and he led to the stand by ten lengths from Dubious and Omahu. There was little or no alteration of the leading positions over the next mile and a. half, but with half a. mile to go Dubious passed Te Ka.wa, and Omahu also joined issue. Dubious was the. first over 'the last group, and went on to win well from Omahu, with Te Kawa a fair third and Vagabond fourth. . Reremoana. was made a big favourite for the Connolly Handicap, and carried almost double that invested on Fool’s Paradise, with Alaric and Gold Jacket best hacked of the others. Despite his load Reremoana was taken to the front, and over the first halfmile he led Megan, Pronto and Fool’s Paradise. After passing the four furlong post Imperial Spark went to the lead, and he was well clear turning into the straight. Half a furlong from Ijie post Imperial Spark looked like winning, but Alaric came with a great- run to heat him bv a short half head, with Fool’s Paradise a good third and Gold Jacket fourth.
Racing concluded with the Borough Handicap, and in a big pool Rafa, Degage and Lady Bentinck each claimed solid support. From a good start Lady Bentinelc was first to show out, hut when the field settled down Rafa led, hut before reaching the halfmile post Benmure had headed Rafa, with Lady Bentinck. Pouma, and Rational close up. As the field raced into the straight Pouma was just in front of Rational and Benmure, and over the final furlong a great race took place, which ended in Avonlea and Avcheen running a- dead heat, with Lady Bentinck a head away. Pouma and Rational were close up. A TICK LA NI) RE-FI AND J CAPS. WANGANUI, May 4. Re-handicaps for the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting are: Gree nla ii e Steepleeh a se.Boni broo k 71b.
