THE, AUCKLAND DISPUTE. A SETTLEMENT REACHED. AUCKLAND, May 21. A special meeting of the Auckland Rugby Referees’ Association was held to-night in connection with the situation that has arisen through the voicing of a protest at last week’s meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Union against the appointment of Mr G. Pearce as referee for the Marist Old Boys-Grammar Old Boys senior match last- Saturday. . A letter conveying the resolutions passed at the meeting of the Rugby Union management committee last evening was received. The union had decided to ask the appointment board to reconsider its resignation, to notify all clubs that any complaints against a referee must be lodged in writing, and that in future appointments by the board would be on'y received by the committee instead of being received and confirmed. . The other two. resolutions carried by the committee were: “That in consequence of our omission to observe a resolution of the committee, dated March 24, 1924, governing complaints against referees, an expression of regret be tendered to. the Referees’ Association from the committee as a whole and not from any individual member thereof” : “that the committee expresses regret to the Referees’ Association and to Mr Pearce that the matter should have been cttscussed under the circumstances.” Mr H. Cliffe (president of the association! detailed the matters placed before the union by a deputation from the association last night. The following resolutions were carried: “That the appointment board be requested to continue in office; that in the interests of Rugbv football all referees be requested to, take the matches allotted to them on Saturday : and that the special meeting stand adjourned till next Monday evening.” The appointment board, at a, subsequent meeting, decided to act in the same spirit as the Referees’ Association and in the interest of the players and the public to make appointments for Saturday and be guided as to the final action by the decision of th® Referees’ Association at the adjourned meeting.
