EMPIRE PROBLEMS.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO BE
SET UP
BY C VBLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, May 20. In the House of Lords, F»arl Balfour announced that the Government proposed to set up a committee analogous to the Committee of _lmperial Defence, which would deal with the great problems of Empire development. , , The statement followed a debate rewarding land, and labour in Konya (British East Africa). The Duke and Duchess of York, who recently retm lied c from East Africa, were interested spectators. * , . Earl Balfour declared that machinery was needed whereby the problems of East Africa and other parts of the Empire might be considered in their entirety. The duty of the proposed committee would be to advise Cabinet. It would have no executive action. There were, he said, tremendous problems in the Empire awaiting solution in a. wider spirit and with a greater command of scientific method than was at present at our disposal. One immense advantage would be to prevent the isolation of our depend-encies-one from another. He was confident the committee would be of immense service as a clearing house for new knowledge.
