LIQUOR BLOCKADE.
RIVAL STATEMENTS. GOVERNMENT CLAIMS SUCCESS. “BOOTLEGGERS” STILL IN BUSINESS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received May 21, noon.) NEW, YORK, MaV 20, .Government prohibition authorities claim that the campaign against liquor runners has been so effective that a severe blow has been dealt to the trade. The 1 blockading coastguard forces haye reported that the liquor fleets off the Atlantic coast are, widely scattered, and are unable to arrange smuggling contracts. Operations of the “bootleg” ring ridicule this, however, claiming that goods ape being landed nightly, despite the blockade. Some support is given to theip claims, as they have raised the prices, even reducing them in certain instances in a spirit of bravado. They claim the Government is unable to stop liquor entering New York and other coast cities, but admit that the effect of the campaign is likely to be that supplies will be cut off to the interior. In the meantime sea captains report that navy liquor ships have taken refuge at Halifax, merely killing time in the belief that the campaign is only temporary and will relax. —A. and N.Z. Assn.
