FISHERMAN’S LONG ROW. NINETEEN HOURS IN OPEN BOAT. IBY TELEGRAPH —PEESts ASSOCIATION ■ WHANGAREI, May 20. An unenviable experience is narrated by Mark Jurakovich, owner of the registered auxiliary fishing boat Marsclen (No. 156),. who was accompanied by his son Frank and a mate named Frank Glucina. While fishing off Pc or Knights Islands in 40 fathoms at 10.30 on Monday night, the vessel swung on to a submerged rock, and was badly ho’ed. Bv dint of continuous baling for two hours and a half the craft was kept afloat until manoeuvred into six fathoms in a comparatively sheltered position, where .she dived nose first to the bottom. Lea vino- at 2.30 a.m. on Tuesday m a 14-foot dinghy, the-three men set out for Ngunguru, on the mainland,.2s miles distant, the journey occupying 19 hours, involving strenuous rowing the whole time in the teeth of a strong south-west wind with a heavy sea running. • ' , The Marsden, which sails from One Tree Point, near the entrance of Whangarei harbour, is 34ft by 10, with twotons o.f ballast, and is -valued at £3OO. She was not covered by insurance. She had over a ton of fish on board at- the time she foundered. Efforts at refloating will probably be made when circumstances are favourable. The shipwrecked party came overland to Whangarei from Ngunguru this afternoon.
