LOWGARTH.
* : ('From Our Own Correspondent). FARMERS' UNION. A meeting of the Lowgarth branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held in the Lowgarth hall on Tuesday evening. Mr. L. Babington (president) occupied the chair. A motion was passed expressing sympathy with Mrs. Massey and family iii the loss they had sustained by the death of the Rt. Hon. W. F.- Massey. The secretary, Mr. A. A. Piper, read a letter from Mr. J. W. Deem, agricultural instructor, in connection with the root-growing competitions. Mr. Deem signified his willingness to judge the swedes, mangolds and carrots on June 23rd. Members, generally agreed that the date would be suitable. A letter was read from Mr. McAlpine • re capitation, also a letter from the provincial secretary. ft was agreed that tire branch should hold a social and dance on Friday, May 2Ut.li, and that Mr. K. Sharpe l>e engaged to play the music. The drawing up of the programme was left in the hands of the executive, Messrs A. D. Johnson, \V. Richardson, president and secretary and C. Schneller. It was decided to hold the annual meeting as soon as the books had been audited. Mr. F. 'William was elected a member. The branch is to be congratulate«d on its progressive spirit, for, although only a new branch, quite a keen interest is being taken in its affairs. The root crop competitions which arc being held for the first time are being entered into with the same keen enthusiasm, as was shown in the recent judging of the soft turnip competition.
