RUBBISH REMOVAL.
COMPULSORY SCHEME SUGGESTED.
BOROUGH COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE.
Speaking in favour of a scheme for a, compulsory rubbish removal, the Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey), at last night’s meeting of the Hawera Borough Council said, he knew of cases in Hawera. from hisi own experience where, in preparing for the laying of the foundations of a building, the workmen had first to dig through a bed of matter composed of decayed bananas, oranges, etc., it being impossible to find a clean patch anywhere. “The present system of rubbish removal seems a goi as you pleas© one,” said the Mayor. “People pay if they wish to have rubbish removed regularly, or they wait , for an epidemic and have it removed free of cost. ” ( Cr. F. Morrissey' agreed with the Mayor that there should be a compulsory' clean up. He said that it had been mentioned that the 00-st -should be borne by a rate, but he did not think that would be fair as some.people having empty sections would have to- pay without getting a-ny .service. Cr. H. N. Lester said that in suburbs of Auckland each householder paid an annual fee of 5s to have refuse removed. Or. A. Reid said that the matter had been before- previous councils, but the annual cost, which would he in the vicinity of £BOO, had been the difficulty. The matter was finally left to the works committee, it to also go into the question of apportioning the cost.
