McDonald beats dwyer

At His Majesty’s last evening a packed house watched the professional 15-round bout between Hughie Dwyer (Australia) and Lachie McDonald (New Zealand middle-weight champion) for a purse of £l5O. The decision was in favour of the latter. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. WELLINGTON, May 19. A large attendance at the Town Hall last night witnessed the opening of the amateur boxing championships under the control ot the Wellington Boxing Association. Results:— Lightweight.—F. Morgan, 9.91, beat J. Rodda. 9.12, in a willing go. Greathead, 9.8. heat J. Burns, 9.13, after leading most of the way. G. Porter, 9.G, met F. Livingstone, 9.13. Porter went down from a right to the jaw in the first round, hitting the boards hard. He rose dazed, staggered, fell again and the referee awarded the fight to Livingstone. Featherweight. —G. Adams, 9.0, knocked out F. Keith, 8.6, in the third round, up to which Keith must have been leading on points. ‘ G. Taylor, 8.10. V, met G. Gurry, 8.13, in a. lively two rounds, and then Gurry fouled, an obviously accidental act. M. Gastein, 9.0, outpointed AT. White, 8.9. Bantams.—A. Burch, B.Of, won on points from G. T. Jeffery, 8.0. H. Larsen, 8.11, outpointed, B. Edgecombe. 8.1. W. E. Priestly, 7.13* outpointed H. Catherall, 8.0; and D. Livingstone, 8.8, secured a similar verdict over M. Brockie, 8.9, after uninteresting exercise. Light-heavyweight—G. Evett, 11.111-, beat B. Franklyn, 12.0, who retired at the end of the second round.
Flyweight.—Clarrie Wood, 7.9, heat J. Cotterill, 7.9, on points. Welterweight.—C. Brown, 10.2, beat C. Tonks, 10.5, on points.
