ELTHAM.
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
At the annual meeting of members of the Eltham Horticultural Society. Air A. Chrysta! presiding, the balancesheet submitted showed that the expenditure exceeded the revenue by £8 8s scl; and the bank balance was £l2 5s 3d. The expenditure for the year was £lO9 9s lid. . In spenkiug to the adoption ot tne report and balance-sheet, the chairman said that the spring show bad been an undoubted success, and if the society had been able to hold the summer show it would have had a repetition of that success, even perhaps in a greater measure As a result- of the spring show, the committee lmd felt justified m spending £ll for a dahlia competition cup, which expenditure had accounted for a decrease in the credit balance. But the-cup was a valuable asset to the society. In regard to the general working of the society he wished to thank Air F. R. Pepperell once again for his work, which had been given practically gratuitously. The society’s Honorarium was £25, but Air Pepperel had not accepted any till this year, when he had taken £l2 10s, giving in return <1 ot spocimon vnscs. He behoved the incoming committee should consider the holding of a chrysanthemum show, which would be a success. Air Chrvstal urged that affiliation with the Iloval Horticultural Society Should be sought* as several benefits would be obtained, as we'l as status, for a. fee of £] Is per year. Air Avery moved a vote of thanks to Air Peppered for his gift. The vote was carried with acclamation. It was decided that the honorarium to the -secretary and treasurer be £25. as in previous years. The election of officers -resulted: President, Rev. \Y. W. Avery (proposed by Air. Chrystal); vice-presidents. Messrs A. Chrystal, T. Fountaine, and Al. Me-Garry ; secretary and treasurer. Mr F. R. 'Pepperell (re-elected) •. gem ■jferal committee, Messrs H. Cover, T. Rover, C. Rowe, H. G. McDonald, A. Rest, J. .Bootten, J. Phillips, C. L. Needham. F.-H. Morgan., N. D. Connell. R. Lewis, H. Best, H. Rowe, r J. B. Grump. Sir Walter Carncross, Rev. E. J. Orange/ Mesdames Fever, O. J. 'Hawken. and S. N. Taplin ; and Miss A. Wilson.
Taking over the presidency, Air Avery thanked the society -for the unsought honour conferred on him. Mr Robert Gibson, probably the premier daffodil exhibitor in the Southern Hemisphere, had agreed that the Eltham Spring show was the premier one for quality in the North Island, and in open and amateur classes could compote with any in New Zealand. The summer show was also no doubt the premier show. Taranaki held a prominent position in the horticultural world of the Dominion, due chiefly to Eltham, and he hoped that when the society held the chrysanthemum show (which decision should be made), it would also be the premier show. Air Chrysta! explained the many advantages to be derived from affiliation with the Royal Society. The sentimental idea of affiliating was greater than the actual benefits to be derived. He moved that the society should apply for early affiliation. — Secohded by Air Peppered.
The motion was carried unanimously. It was decided to hold a two days summer show in February next, the question of dates being left to the new committee.
The secretary said the new committee should consider the advisability of the lady members conducting the tearooms at tlie shows.
The president said another matter for the committee was to organise lectures by experts for members, and thus create more interest and help those desirous of growing flowers. The following executive committee were elected: Messrs T. Fountaine, H. Cover. C. Rowe, Airs 0. J. Hawken, and Alias A. T. Quip. ' A vote of thanks was accorded the outgoing president.
