CENTRAL (8) v. METHODIST (3). At Hawera on Saturday' the Methodist Young Men’s Club met the Hawera Central -Boy’s Club in the annual football match, and a. close and interesting game resulted in a win for the Central by 8 points to 3. A very st re no us game was witnessed. The Central team, through better combination, held the opposing team in their own 25 for the greater part of the first spell. The first points gained were by a drop kick from a mark by T. Nolan. Central 3, Methodist 0. From the kick-off Centra] came again, but were penalised for off-side play, Methodist finding the line about half-way. Play remained here for about five minutes, after which time was sounded. On resuming play Methodist pressed very hard, and Owen, securing from a scrum, passed to Dowdle, the ball eventually reaching Bishop on the wing, and he went across to score Methodists’ only try. Hulbert failed to convert, Central 3, Methodist 3. From the. kick-off the game was very ragged, both sides showing some unnecessary vigour. Fi'om a line-out out half-way the Central forwards broke away with a passing rush, but were stopped by the Methodist fullback, who found the line, and from the throw-in an obstruction resulted in a scrum about 10 yards from the line. Wool ford, at half, secured the ball from the scrum, and, after passing four of the opposing side, scored a brilliant try. C. Busing converted from a difficult angle. Methodist forwards then put up a vigorous attack, and were pressing very hard when the whistle sounded for no-side. The game ended: Central 8, Methodist 3. Mr Arnold refereed.
