INSTRUCTIONS TO DELEGATES. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOClATlON—copyright LONDON, May 17, The national executives of the engineering and trades unions confer- on Wednesday to consider the employers’ proposal. It is understood that all the unions, representing half a million workers, instructed their representatives to decline the offer and to refuse any compromise on Hours and conditions, and at the same time to press for the unions’ original demands.
A cable on April 23 stated: In reply to the demands of the Engineering Trades Union for an increase in wages of 20s a week, the employers have submitted a nroposal to the 40 trades unions concerned. This suggests increased hours in order to iveduce the costs of oroduction and counter foreign competition. At present the men work 47 hours a week at Is an hour, plus a bonus of 10s. The employers propose a week of 50 hours at Is an hour, and a bonus of 12s. The hours of night workers, who are nOw receiving time and two-tliirds, would be increased from 47 to 52. V. The sub-committee of the union is amazed at the proposals, which it is submitting to the full executive.
