THE PRICE OF BREAD.

(To the Editor). S'; r —Some short time ago an increase in the price of flour was recorded, and bread went up in sympathy in the majority of towns. ' Hawera bakers, for reasons best known to themseives, increased the price b\ . twopence per large loaf as against the increase of one penny in many places. EaMly a, decrease in the price of .flour has been recorded, and. judging by t Press reports, orices of bread have dropped in s ymapthv. Such is not the case in Hawera, and I think >t is Inch time the master bakers took tins ? ' hand and gave the consumers the bene fit. It seems to me that any increase is passed on before the ink on the report is drv, hut when it comes to a decrease the reverse is the case, an the parties concerned move very slowly. Trusting some ab'er pen than mine will take this matter up, 1 am, etc., CONSUME!!. ,

Noriiianby, Alavj 15. [The above letter was referred this morning to Hawera bakers. Tb® m ~ formation was obtained by a ptar reporter that the local price of bread was identical with that charged m Christchurch, although that 7city was the cheapest source, from which Hawera could draw its supply of flour. Flour was obtainable ■ at - Christchurch, at £lB per ton, less.2-J per cent discount, and the freight charges to Hawera amounted to a further £2. In comparison with the ruling prices of bread elsewhere, it; might be mentioned that the local ' price was Id delivered, and 2d booked, per) large loaf, less than that of Wanganui, despite the fact that freight, from Wunganui to Hawera was £1 9s per ton.]
