THE SMILE CASTLE
A CORNER ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN.
THE CASTLE PLEDSE.
I promise to smile every time I can, and to chase all the . frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness. My Deni- Children, — It has been a sad week for everyone, for we have seen the passing of one of our country's greatest and noblest statesmen. Our late Prime Minister’s sterling qualities have been recognised. and appreciated not only in New Zealand, but throughout the' whole Empire, and he leaves behind a. record 1 of faithful work and self-sacrificing service that has endeared him to all. . Some day, you, my happy-faced Smiles, will be men and women, and will need to know more about the government, of our country. By voting, you will have a share in making- the best laws for 'it. Possibly some of the boys may be members of Parliament. There is no reason why even greater honours should not come to members of Sniile Castle. But, whatever the future holds for you, the late Mr. Massey has given you a very high standard to live up to. The best way in which Smiles can show that they, too, regret our Dominion’s great loss, is by making to-night the resolve to carry out in their lives the splendid example of service, and of willing work for others before self, set by the late leader of our Government. It. is what you do now that will decide what kind of man or woman you are going to be when you grow up. Aim at something high, take a smiling face with you, and you will succeed. “Play up! play up! and play the game.” We have had a few more practices at our basket-ball this week, and soon we should be quite the best team in Fairyland. How are your school games progressing? I’ve not been able to watch you this week. I hope you will all remember last week’s announcement, and bring along some new members so that you may the sooner be told the surprise which is stored up for you. There are some selfish Smiles who have not written to me since the beginning of the year when they joined. Where have they been, and why have they deserted their Queen? Usually the same faithful ones*do all the writing. In the Record Book is a page for each Smile. Visitors to the Castle sometimes- ask to see this. It was suggested to me that I cross off the roll all those who do not attend meetings -or take enough interest to write sometimes. I answered that I was still hopeful, and that I knew you would remain loyal. Was.l right? Certainly you have school lessons y but remember that a little letter will help your English. Won’t it? Now, after this, I’ll expect to have a really heavy mail next week to make up for the few this week. Hoping hard, YOUR LOVING QUEEN.
