THE GAME SANCTUARIES.
I MEG A L SHOOT IN G. A WARNING. The Hawera Acclimatisation Society have previously had no trouble with illegal shooting in the game sanctuaries. but they have now been informed that last Wednesday a gang were operating in the reserve between Ketemarae and Eltliam on a day when most of the owners were away from home. The society is making every effort to- secure information leading to the discovery of the offenders, hut so far have not been able to do so. They still hope, however, that they will he able to bring them to book, as such an offence k a flagrant breach of the Game Protection Act. In addition 'such offenders would be banned by all decent sportsmen. For some years the society have concentrated on' establishing pheasants and quail in the sanctuaries so as to be able vin time to replenish the depleted numbers of feathered game in the province, and it is disappointing to them, to sav the least, that their efforts are being gathered. A warning is given that in the event of prosecution for poaching or other breaches of the Act the society would press for the heaviest penalty that can be inflicted.
