KITCHENER’S DEATH.
A GERMAN STATEAIENT. THEY DID NOT DO TT. EX-PRIVATE SECRETARY’S REPLY BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received May 16, 12.10 p.m. LONDON, May 15. The Germans’ new hook, “Trui.i About Ear! Kitchener,” quotes General Ludendorff’s letter that Kitchener’s death was neither the work of a German mine nor of a German torpedoer, biit of a power which would not permit Earl Kitchener to reorganise the Russian army, because the destruction of Tsarist Russia had been decided upon. Replying to this statement, Sir Geo. Arthur, who was private secretary to Earl Kitchener from 1914 to 1916, today said that there was no question about it that the secret of Earl Kitchener’s visit was betrayed by Russia to Germany, who made special preparations. “We know the name of the officer who laid the mine, but whether it was to stop Earl Kitchener rallying the Russian army I cannot say.”—-A. and N.Z.
