WASH-OUTS REPORTED. RESULT OF HEAVY RAINFALL. ' IBX TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. TAUMARUNUI, "Allay 15. Exceptionally heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunder, was experienced last uight. Since Tuesday G.bl inches have fallen, and there was a rapid rise in the Wanganui River. Yesterday morning the river had risen over three feet, but when the rain ceased the river fell. Last night’s heavy downpour, however, caused the river to rise five feet above the usual level. During this morning the river rose another foot, and only protective groyns saved the lower portions of the town from flood. A wash-out on the main highway about six miles north of Taumarunui cut off connection with Churn and To Kuiti.

v Later. Road communication north and south is now blocked by a washout at Oio in- the south and at Taringamotu in the north. The rain is easing off at present.
