The board of inquiry into the use of New Zealand coal in locomotives and engines oil the New Zealand railways heard evidence here to-day. H. D. Thomson, Under-Secretary for Immigration, said that since 1922 no special inducement had been made to bring minors to New Zealand. In 1929.93' 397 miners came here; in 192324, 277; in 1924-25, 269 ; a total of 943. There has been no special requisition for miners by the companies. The arrival of miners is now dropping off. About- two years ago he was advised that he had* better tell the miners intending to come here tha-t they might not; he fully employed, as miners were then working short time. In 1919 the Imperial Governmeint proposed that New Zealand should take 500 Cornish miners, hut- this offer was turned down.
