RUGBY FOOTBALL.

MEETING OF UNION

INVITATION TO TRANCE. (by yelgqrafb—p'.u.as association. WELLINGTON, May 13. Tli© executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union met to-night. A resolution was passed placing on record recognition and appreciation of the life work of Mr Massey, and a deep sense of the loss to New Zealand and the Empire by his death. Mr Dean paid a tribute to Mr Massey’s interest in and help given to the AM Blacks during their tour abroad. The executive received a protest from Hawke’s Bay against the proposed tour of a Maori team in New Zealand, on the ground of undue interference with the Hawke’s Bay representative fixtures. It was stated that a Maori tour might enlist six prominent Hawke’s Bay players. Members stated there had been trouble in winding up the finances of previous Rugby tours, and it was decided to inform the Maori Advisory Board that the union, was of opinion that the tour should not take place this year owing to the large programme of international, provincial and club fixtures.

•'! am extremely disappointed,” said Mr Dean, after reading a letter from the English Rugby Union stating that it was undesirable- that an Imperial advisory board be formed, and suggesting instead that an Imperial Rugby conference he hold at least every three years in London. Mr Dean remarked that such a conference would be as abortive as the last one apparently was. A sub-committee was set up to draft a reply. Mr McKenzie (Wairara.pa) was appointed manager of the New Zealand team in Australia next month. It was decided to invite Trance to send a team tp New Zealand in 192 G. MID-WEEK COMPETITION. CITY A (17) V. WAIMATE (6). Playing yesterday, City A and W'aimate had a good .open contest, in which a lot of fast play was seen. City had a good deal the best of the game, but the greasy ball, spoilt a number of good openings. City went off with a good rush, and after a few minutes in mid-field, a- hack movement resulted in Hall scoring a good try. The kick failed. Keeping up the pressure, and despite Waimate’s good defence, the forwards came downfield again, and Dalgleish scored. Then Waimate attacked, and by fast following up Riirn Sam scored a good try. The kick failed. City hacks got to work, and a nice rush ended In a- try by Hands, which Foster converted. Waimate, nothing daunted, retaliated vigorously, and -after a loose rush Rum Sam scored again. The second spell saw the Maroons attacking most of the time. From a loose rush Foster got across and sesecured a really good try. No goal resulted. Play went up and down field for a considerable portion of the spell. City missing several chances through kicking too hard. At length, just before the whistle went, thd forwards rushed down and Mathieson secured a try. The kick failed. Again they attacked, and Foster scored still another try, the kick failing. Waimate tried hard to score again, and attacked vigorously towards the end of the game, but the defence was sound, and the game resulted : Citv A 20, Waimate 6. Mr J Bills was referee. OHANGAI (U) v. CITY B (9). , A close struggle at Ohangai between City B and the local team saw the latter just ahead at the conclusion by a margin of'two points, the difference being made by the conversion of a try. 'Pile play in the match; between Tokaora and Norman by, played at Norma nby on Tuesday, was chiefly eonfined to the forwards, the state of the ball preventing accurate handling. The first spell ended in favour of Normanby, Howie scoring a try after a loose rush. The second spe'll was marked by a keen struggle, and at length Tokaora was rewarded'for its persistence when Griffin got across and scored a try. The kick in both cases failed.
