BOWLING

HAWERA’S CLOSING DAY. The official closing for the .season of the Hawera Club Is green took place on Saturday, a full complement of members, with many visiting bowlers Aiid ladies ibeing present. During the afternoon tea adjournment the president (Mr. S. Adamson) took the opportunity of referring to the season which they were about to close. In the first place, he expressed the club’s appreciation of the hospitality and valued, assistance they had received from the ladies during the season. He considered the club was very fortunate in having so many ladies always willing to help, and - the club was deeply indebted to them. The season had been very favourable to bowlers, play on the green extending to nearly eight months. There had been matches with most tilths affiliated to the Taranaki Centre. The club was visited by Auckland, Hlaistingis and Waverley. Dealing with the competitions—ferns, buttons, singles and pairs championships-—the president said thets© matches always created great keenness, and he considered they greatly helped to maintain the standard of bowling. The club, during the season, won the Syme Shield, an annual event between Man.aia, Patea, Park and Haw-era.. In, the Banner competition Haw-era entered two teams for the southern division, the R team winning. In the play-off New Plymouth, Strafford, Piha>ma and Hawera competed, Pih-aima winning on the average of the aggregate score. The club was represented by three rinks at the Taranaki Centre tournament. Although not successful, all had an enjoyable time. In conjunction with the Park Club, the second South Taranaki tournament was run, which a-ll hoped would be an annual event. The club was represented by eight rinks, that skifpped by Mr, Roibib being runners-up in the final. Thanks were due to the green superintendents, 'Messrs. C’orkill and McDonald, and the caretaker for their efforts daring the season; also to, Mr. John Hicks, who generously provided cigarettes for players during the afternoon.

The trophies won during the season were then presented as follows: Singles onampion ship.—S. Maslin 1, J. P. O’Gorman 2.

Pairs championship (medals kindly donated by Mr. J. N. Anderson). —7T. Herbert, J. Foy (skip) 1, A. H. Hodge, S. Adamson (skip) 2. Colts’ championship.—R. P. Goodchap 1. During the afternoon a match wa.s played between members over 55 and under. After an enjoyable game of 21 heads the veterans won by a small margin.
