HOCKEY.

If the New Zealand tournament is. held in Wellington this year (.says, a critic) the Wellington Association may endeavour to hold it during Winter Show week, which is in. July. This is an excellent, idea., for ait that time the city will have more people in 'it than at any other period of the winter, and thus the game will be advertised "more than it otherwise would be. Also a. better gate would be secured it it were desired. Hockey is a good game to watch, but the public has not realised it- since the war. It. has been suggested that such a date would clash with the tour of the Australian team if the proposed visit eventuates. July and August have been indicated a 3 the probable months during which the team* would be in the country. The coinciding of dates need not be regarded as a. clash. One test, is to ho played. If this game were held in Wellington during the tournament or immediately after it the choice of a New Zealand representative team would he simplified, for , all the available players would be collected already in one town. If the. test is held in some other centre there would be a serious clash, as the best players in the town where the Australian tie am happened to be when, the tournament was being held would be away from home representing their province against the rest of New Zealand. Apparently either Wellington, must have the test match or the tournament must be held later in the season than, during the show. The English women's hpekoy team beat Wales by 9—o, bringing its total for the five games played to. 63. No goals, had been scored against it. J. O. Maistermian, the Oxford hockey blue, who wais. recently chosen to play for England against Scotland, is a. versatile. athlete. In addition to playing hockey, he ha,s represented England at lawn tennis, and Oxford County at. cricket. He can hold bis own a.s a golfer with, most peonle. He has also represented Oxford Univensity in the high jump versus. Cambridge

HOCKEY IN THE, SOT-TOOTS. The annual meeting of the Wellington Primary Schools Hockey Association. was held recently and everything indicates a great increase in interest tlii® season. The. report stated that there would be an increase of five teams over the number competing last season. Regret was expressed that a representative game had not been played with other districts, but a compromise hiad been reached by playing a frame with the intermediate grade, thus enabling the boys to attain representative, honours and to obtain the representative badge presented by the Wellington Hockey Association. All the schools that had teams laist reason will be represented this .seaison. and Kihandallnh. Northland, and Wadestown schools, will also enter • their tommiis. Tvarori and Hataitai are entering three teams each, and Lyall Bav two. All the teams will he coached by men who are teachers and active players.
