Considerable interest was taken in the Suoreme Court trial oi William Williamson, a tally clerk employed by the Union Steam Ship Company, who was charged with stealing hve bottles of burgundy, the property of the Union Steam Ship Company. Mr. Macassey, who conducted tne case for the Crown, said it was verydifficult to secure convictions in cases involving pillaging and theft oi a ship s caro-o. Accused said that he saw they had been pillaged from a case, but placed them in his pocket and went to the Union Steam Ship Company s office to place the wine there. Mr Macassev contended, however, that his contradictory statements after arrest did not indicate that he was innocent His Honour, in summing up, said he looked upon, the case as an impoi ant one. as it had to do ■with, pi /JJ?” incr on wharves, which was very difficult- to prove. Pillaging had assumed such proportions that it was now quite a serious factor in the cost ol living. It was important to the community and was also important to the accused, as his liberty and character were at stake. Why was not accused s evidence given .in the Magistrate s Court, not withheld until the case came before the Supreme Court A SENTENCES AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, May 6. Ac the Supreme Court to-day Alexander Forsyth. Gouldsbury was found cniiltv of carnally knowing a girl under 16, who was employed by his hrm. The jury, in recommending accused to clemency, exnressed the opinion that the girl yielded very readily, and further had not been instructed bv her mother in the things she should know. Sentence was deferred till to-morrow. George Alexander Milne, who was found " guilty the previous day ol offences against males, was sentenced to ten years’ hard labour.
