FIVE! YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT. (.BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, May 7. Ah the Supreme Court, Alexander Forsyth Goutldislbury, found guilty of carnal knowledge with a girl under 16 years of age, was sentenced to five years’ hand Ojalbour. Mr. Justice Sim disregarded the jury’s recommendation for clemency owing to the girl yielding readily, .stating that accused was 38 years old and married, and the girl wais practically entrusted to his care by her parents. ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. AUCKLAND. May 7. Arising out of the death of the mlan Biildliffe in the City Hotel about’ three weeks ago through an overdose of a ding, George Edwaird Barker, aged 21, who was associated with deceased, appeared at the Police Court this morning on a charge of vagrancy. In masking that Barker be further remanded until May 14, Chief-Detective Cummings istabed that a charge of manslaughter would be .preferred against accused on that date. Mr. Moody', who appeared for Barker, said that under the cireumstanioas he would ndb lapply for bail. The remand was granted. THE BEST CASE. AUCKLAND, May 7. The charge against Albert Edward Bast, aged 1 28, for assaulting bis sister, Gertrude Best, with intent to do grievous bodily harm, was continued at the Police Court. / Mr. Moody appeared for the accussed. * Eileen Florence Bast gave evidence to the effect that (accused often indulged in liquor and knocked: his sister about. ... Dr. Murray gave evidence regarding the serious' injuries sustained by Gertrude Best. Witness 'also saw accused. ah the watchihowse after the alleged 1 assault. His hands were covered! with blood and his .actions indicated thiat he had had some liquor. Sergeant Lambert said that shortly after 8 o’clock on the night, of April 15 he saw -a. .crowd in Upper Queen Street, and on investigating he found Gertrude Best ‘lying on the footpath covered in blood, with her neck, face and hands cut. She said) “He did it,” pointing to her brother. Accused, when .asked by witness why he had assaulted his sister, said: “T don’t know.” A. number of other witnesses gave evidence. Ernest Alfred Scbolx said he was from Western Australia and jiiis father wais also a native of Australia. Senior-Detective Ward .said accused denied the improprieties alleged by his sifeter. Accused, pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.' Counsel did not press for bail.
