- A Reuter message from Aladrjd reports the death of the Canadian Alfred Lester, from pneumonia, while on a health tour.

One of Eltham’s oldest and highly respected residents -passed away yesterday, viz., Air. W. IN. Jenkins, of Derby Street. The late Air. Jenkins was one of Eltham’s pioneers. He came to the town, with his brother T. H. Jenkins many years ago, practically when, the district was all standing in bush and consequently he had seen many changes. He was of a quiet unassuming disposition, but was keenly interested in the progress of the district. Sir Ernesib Rutherford, the eminent scientist, will, in a few months’ time, revisit New Zealand-. ,Sir Ernest will go to Australia first to deiliver a series of lectures under the auspices of the 'various universities of the Commonwealth. He will be accompanied, by Lady Rutherford, and after staying a few. weeks in Australia -will depart for New Zealand on September 25, where both his parents and those of -hia wife reside.

. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister for Customs, who is at present on a health recruiting trip to the United States, will probablv arrive back in the Dominion early in June. In making a statement to this effect the Hon. Mr. Anderson said that Dr. York, the specialist to whom Air. Stewart had gone for treatment, was hopeful that great benefit-would accrue. The country could not afford to run any risk of losing the services of a man like Air.Stewart, whose mental powers were very far above those ot ah average man reports our Wellington correspondent.

Viscount Leverhulme, founder of Pont Sunlight and chairman of Lever Bros., Ltd., thfe soap manufacturers, is dead (reports a London cable). He had been seriously ill with inflammation of the lungs. Viscount Leverhulme, who visited. New Zealand at the beginning of I’aist year, was aged 74. He enberedi hi® father’s 'business at the age of sixteen. Later he became chairman of the firm of Lever Bros., and founded Port Sunlight, which was planned on “garden city” lines for the benefit of the firm’s big army of workers. He was AI.P. for Wirral for four years after four unsuccessful Parliamentary contests. He. presented ’ Stafford House to the nation in 1913. Lady Lever died after a brief illness in July, 1913. Deceased, was created a peer in 1917 and a viiscountcy was conferred on him in 1922. He purchased the islands of Lewis in, 1918 and another ■'island in 1919. A splendid art gallery in memory of his wife was opened at Plonb Sunlight in 1922. Hits heir i:s his son, the Hon. AV. H. Lever.
