MANAIA TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board was held last evening. There were present : Commissioners L. G. Nielson (chairman). V. H. Hobdav, C. T. W. .Tones. J. Hickey. J. A. G. Cosgrove. S. H. Greaves, N. G. Tunes, and W. .J. Radley (clerk). DEPUTATIONS Mr T. Hotter, representing the Oddfellows’ Lodge, waited on the Board to request assistance in removing the hedge along the length of the Ocldfe'lows’ Hall between the hall and the "Women’s Rest Room. —The necessarypermission was granted, the Board to meet half the cast. SCHOOL FOOTPATH. Mr J. linkers, representing the School Committee. waited ou the Board to ask that the footpath in front of the school should be meta’led. He explained that the path was in front Of the school, and the metalling, besides being of importance in providing a dry path for the school children, would add to the neatness and attraction of the approach, to the school. If assisted by the Board the School Committee was willing to co-operate in having the work done.

Cr. Junes said that every endeavour should be made to safeguard the health of the -school children, and the action requested would be a step in the right direction, as it would help them to reach the school with dry feet during the winter months. On his motion, it- was decided to have the work competed. and that it he commenced as early as possible. IMPOUNDING STOCK.

The town ranger (Mr IT. V. Ricketts) waited upon the meeting and stated that on Good Friday 2-1 cows found straying on the town roads had been impounded. Of this number poundage had been paid in respect of six only, the remainder, though they were not at the time wearing the license chain, having proved to be licensed to graze on the roads. He pointed out that such conditions were unsatisfactory to him in the discharge oi' his duty, amt asked to be directed as to future action.

During a subsequent interview, the poundkeeper (Mr A. Merrie) explained to the Board that the animals mentioned had been released, as the owners had produced license receipts, and in accordance with his instructions he had no power to retain them. He explained. however, that the system entailed difficulties, as he had no means of identifying the particular animal in respect oi" which the license had been issued.

The opinion was expressed that the system of registration shou’d he amended so that individual animals could be identified, but pending arrangements, the poundkeeper was instructed that in the meantime any animals impounded should be released on the production of. a registration receipt. TENDERS. The tender at 7s a yard submitted by J. Parker for 300 yards of metal from the cemetery pit was accepted. The closing date of tenders lor the lease of the Bound Bush in the Domain Reserve was extended for fourteen Ca ' S ’ TOWN FOREMAN. Five applications were received for the position of Town Foreman. After 'engthy consideration, the final choice rested between Messrs J. D. Borne (Manain) and J. L. Letts (Wanganui). it being resolved,, on the casting vote of the chairman, to request the latter to interview the Board on a date to be arranged. I OVERDUE RATES. I A list of names in respect of rates | outstanding was reviewed, *hnd t.he clerk was instructed to take the necessary action to collect all rates forthwith. GENERAL. Acknowledgment of the Board’s letter extending sympathy to the Prime Minister, the Bight" Hon. "W. F. Massey, in his illness was received from his private secretary. On behalf of the Manaia branch of the Phmket Society, Mrs R. M. Poyliter (hon. secretary;, wrote asking if the Board could assist the society’ in having a heater in-sta led in the Plunket rooms.—lt was decided to reply stating that the application could not "be entertained.

L. A. Walters wrote stating that for business purposes lie required a considerable amounv of water, and requesting- that he be permitted to draw , ; pon the town supply at a flat rate. — The chairman and clerk were autlii.ri.sed to make arrangements with the applicant. Mr T. Hotter’*, application for attention to the footpath fronting his property was referred to the works committee.

The Primary Schools Rugby Union was granted the use of the Domain grounds for matches under supervision of the union.

The Waimate Witness proprietary was grained permission to insta! a Pei'.on wheel to operate machinery and to use the town water supply during the pleasure of the Board. With reference to opening the road in rear of the show buildings on the Domnin, which had been discussed at the previous meeting, it was decided to offer-the services of a man, provided the Horticultural Society and the Golf Club also engage a man in the work. Accounts totalling £498 4s 7d v.cie passed for payment.
