(By Maecenas.) The flat racing season will be closed this week, when the Hawke’s Bay. Whangaroi and Amberley clubs hold meetings. • Should much rain fall at Hastings between now and Saturday it will materially affect the- contest between Gloaming and The Hawke. Very few champion performers show marked superiority on a soft race track, and for this reason • it will surprise many should Gloaming and The Hawk meet on Saturday if there is the least suspicion ,of a soft or even greasy track at Hastings. Narrow Neck ran an excellent second to Sir Rosebery at Avondale, and if he reproduces this form he may prove too good for Irish Jig at AVhangarei. Now that Roy Reid is laid aside owing to his accident at the Hamilton meeting. Trainer J. H. Jefferd will have to look for a fresh horseman for the Hawke’s Bay meeting. Master Peter will he a runner in the hurdle races at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, and while lie. May not secure any prize money, the races will enhance his prospects in such" races" as the Wanganui and Groat Northern Steeplechases.
While the 'Hawke's Bay .7ookev Club race on Friday and Saturday next, the one-clay fixture of Whangarei and Am her ley will he held on Saturday. For a maiden performer, Bright Sol ■showed extra good form on the. first day of the recent Avondale meeting, and a repetition of the; form will find him well nigh unbeatable in the Portland Welter, to be run at Whangarei on Saturday. As H. Gray will ride Serene in the Longlands Welter at Hastings to-mor-rok (Friday) the imported gelding .is sure to start favourite. Serene is on the improve, and will be useful with age. Although Gold Box has a fair load (9.6) in'the Nursery Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, he has earned it all, and if the track is in good order, Gold Box will keep the other youngsters galloping. Although Trainer J“. S. Jamieson has had a big team of imported horses under his charge during the current season, they have not won the races or money expected, and it. certainly appears as if many of them were overrated. La lleve, who has caused starters much trouble im a racing career, was on her worst behaviour- at the Marlborough meeting, where she was “left” by half a furlong on the opening day. Oil the second day of the same meeting La Reve again attempted to whip around when the harrier rose, but in the attempt La Beve collided with Crown Star, and glancing off got away reasonably well, but the incident caused Crown Star many lengths, and incidentally the race, as lie finished within half a length of (.he winner. Such is Hie luck of racing. When competing against a good class of horses at Avondale the imported Steel Bar performed well, although he failed to gain a “place.” Steel Bar has an engagement in the Waipu Welter at Whangarei on Saturday, and, like his stable mate. Bright Sol, will prove, hard to heat if supported from the right quarter, a very essential point. < Considering how late the - meeting is, the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club are fortunate in receiving such a. good response from owners for their cup. Certain'y the field is not a liigh-class one, but- there is material enough engaged to make an interesting race. Since his success over a 10-furlong course at Piccarton at Faster, Fool’s Paradise lias trained on well, hut, like most of Absurd’-s stock. it is very doubtful whether this gelding will appreciate the extra two furlongs. Haze, from the dangerous Greenwood stalf'e, may run well.
There arc* some who think Rimnytnede at the weight capable of extending Gloaming in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes to-morrow. Should Gloaming not easily beat his two-year-old rival to-morrow, then there will be many found who wi'l support The Hawk against Gloaming in the Ormond Cup on Saturday.
At the. present time one is often asked which will win in the Ormond
Gold Cup, Gloaming or The Hawk! On actual form it is impossible to get a guide, but knowing what a great judge R. J. Mason is, and knowing how he guards his great reputation, one must select Gloaming it lie is started. ALTERATIONS TO C.J.C. PROGRAMME. CHRISTCHURCH, May 6. At the meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, the report of the programme committee showed that the only increase in stakes at the Grand National meeting was in the Winter Cup. which has been raised from 800 sows, to 1000 sovs. Alterations of the minimum weights have been made in a few races, but. the main amendment has been to eliminate the set penalties and adopt the system of re-handicapping winners. The stake of the New Zealand -Cup remains the same, but the: new conditions, as re-handicapping, will apply, and in view of the statutory minimum of 7st. imposed by Parliament a maximum limit of the handicap has been fixed at 9st 6fbs.
