RIFLE SHOOTING.

I'R EXTHAM MEETING

THE FINAL FIFTY

(BY TELKGRiPB — V BESS ASSOCIATION.) TRENTHAM, May 6.

The end of the 1925 Mew Zealand Bislev draws near. To-morrow, weatiier permitting, will witness the King’s Prize Match, when the 50 who have compiled the highest aggregates out of the belt series concluded this afternoon will lire 10 shots at 900 yards.

Two single range matches (Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay) and the second stage of the Otago Match (interrupted yesterday) were completed by the middle of this afternoon, and produced much reshuffling of positions and movements into and out of “the fifty.” The outstanding feature is young Anderson’s retention of first place in spite of two poor hits at the 900 yards, in the Hawke’s Bay Match and the 'second leg of the Otago Match. The reason is tljat others who might have put in a serious challenge did even worse.

The conditions at the beginning of the day were good, the weather being bright "and sunny with no wind, though elevation was puzzling to some men. Towards noon a brisk breeze came down the valley on the right front and eddied about "the range most disconcertingly, and the score boards bore mute testimony to the gruelling time the men on the mounds were passing through. The afternoon continued bright and breezy for the conclusion of the Otago match, and fluctuations among scores became still more noticeable. C. Whiteman got 46 oh, which with the same total brought forward from yesterday gave him second place. The winner, Simpson, only notched 44, but he had made the possible at the 800 yards yesterday. The later portion of the afternoon was. devoted to the Champion Teams Match (five men aside), for which 31 teams entered, and the North versus South Island Match (20 men aside). These were fired simultaneously. The ranges were 300, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each.

The Rifle Clubs’ Champion Teams Match (for teams of five, counting all scores in the belt series) was won bv Petone yvith a score of 2347. They take the C.A.C. Petone made doubly sure of annexing this trophy permanently by winning it three times at intervals and now twice in succession. Their score last year was 2338. The C.A.C.
