Th 6 Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated May 4, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — BUTTER. Temporary improvement in market, earlier this week and brisk trade up to. about 1725. Market quiet, with tendency in favour of buyers again. Official quotations are:— New Zealand.—Finest sa'ted, 168 s to L72s per cwt (Is 6d to Is 6£d per lb); mi salted, 172 s to 176 s per cwt (Is to Is 6fid per lb) ; other qualities, 140 s to 166 s per cwt (Is 2d to Is s*d per lb), Australian. —Salted, 158 sto 162 s per. cwt (Is 4gd to Is per lb); other qualities. 140 s to 154 s per cwt (Is 3d to Is 4-i-d per lb); unsalted, 160 s up to 166 s per ewt (Is 5d to Is 52d per lb); other qualities, 144 sto 150 s per cwt (Is 3*d to Is 4d per lb). Argentine.—ls4s to 158 s per cwt (Is 4id to Is 4£d per lb); exceptional, 160 s per cwt (Is 5d per lb); other qualities, 146 s to 152 s per cwt (Is 3-id to Is 4Jd per lb). . CHEESE. Market slow and lower prices have been accepted. .Stocks of Canadian are nearly exhausted. Official quotations are:— English.—Finest farmers’, market firm and stocks small; 135 s to 140 s per cwt (Is 2-i-d to Is 3d per lb). New Zealand. —Coloured 05s to 9i s per ewt (10d to 101 d P el " lb) ; white, 96s to 97s per cwt (10Jd per lb). Australian. —Coloured and white, 94s pet cwt (lOd per lb); white, 100 s per ewt (10Jd per lb). Shipments of New Zealand produce arrived this week per s.s. Waimaiia and Port Curtis. Estimated stocks of cheese on the Ist May at London, Liverpool an dßristol were: Canadian and American, 4250 boxes: New Zealand and Australian, 62,400 crates, against 5050 boxes and 131,200 crates for the same time last year.

SHEEPSKINS, HIDES AND TALiLOM . Dailgety and Co. report as under: Sheepskins.—Since our last report vaiues for dry skins depteciated by J-d to Id pen- lb, with the exception of haltibreaw and fine crossbreds, which were about- equal to late rates, Salties were lower by Is. to Is 3d each. Hides. —We offered some very attractive parcels of ox, all weights, and for an extra heavy parcel of butchers we .secured! lid per lb. Specially prepared lots of heavies and light-weights showed an advance of gd per lb on previous quotations. Light-weights, kip, yearling and calf sold well up to late rates. Cut, slippy and inferior lots at times were hard to quit, and sold at low rates. Tallow was in fair demand and prices for good mixed lots were on apar with late rates.

MEAT MARKET. The New Zealand'Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd , report-: Lamb, 12|d per lb (average) ; market firm. Mutton: Wether and maiden ewe, light B§d per lb, heavy 6jjd P®r l‘b; ewe, light 6ld per lb; heavy 6d per lb. Small demand.
