TEST CRICKET.
HOBBS ON “BARR.ACKERS.”
LUCK OF THE TOSS. e ENGLISH PRESS COMMENT. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received May 4, 8.55 a.m. LONDON, May 3. Hobbs in bis third article comments on the Australian passion for cricket, as evidenced by the enormous crowns at the tests. The crowds thoroughly know the game and their sense of humour depends On how you receive it. They can amuse, or irritate, according to a man’s temperament. If you get in their bad books, Heaven help you. The best thing is to laugh with the ban-ackers. Ir you lose your head, -they will worry you to death. Any new player would rind the barraciters humour rather trying, but would eventually grit to bear it quite cheerfully. The only barracking, that annoyed me was the crowds cheering when we justifiably but unsuccessfully appealed. They do jt out of sheer devilment, but 1 wish they Would not. The newspaper Standard, says that if any proposal is made regarding the toss it is preferable that it should emanate from Australia, who never winced when Jackson won five times in succession. It is well to re member that. In 109 tests, Australia won the toss only once more than England Oil these figures it asks .if a change is worth while. It is fin fix ion that luck levels itself. Let its rather concentrate as sportsmen arid cricketers off the development of players capable of winning when the toss is lost. The Evening News declares that if any serious proposal , for compensation for losing the foSs reaches Australia, it will raise a smile. Had England won seventy per cent, of the tosses in the whole of the series, We might gay something, but to propose an alteration when the spin of the coin is against us, is neither pfirtcularly sportsmanlike nor diplomatic. We are. out to play the game by practically declaring Australians toss better.—-Sydney Sun Cable.
