PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr. J. S. Yeates, a son of Mr. A. \\ ■ Yeates, Inglewood, has been successful in gaining the Ph.D. degree (Doctor of Philosophy). It is understood this is the first' time this degree has been awarded in the Dominion.

At the committee meeting of the Bgjmont A. and P. Association on Saturday, a vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Gideon Inkster, of Normianby, a very old .supporter of the association and a frequent, exhibitor, was passed. Many friends in Hawera. and district will be interested to hear that Walter Fennell is making good strides in his ■singing at the Royal Academy, London. Writing to friends in Hawera, he says, inter alia, that he was picked to sing the part of Jesus in. Bach’s “Passion” at Guildlford on April 1, and on the following night to sing his Schumann songs by special request of the principal of the Academy, at an orchestral concert. He adds : “We all had to sing before the principal, and I was picked. It is the chief baritone part. I did not expect to get the part, because • I was up against two Welsh boys who have been at the academy for years.”

Mr. Arthur Morton, president of the National Dairy Association of New ■Zealand, has arrived by the s.s. Corinthic (writes a London correspondent). He will probably make a stay of about six months, during which time he intends to visit the northern part of Europe, including Belgium, Holland Denmark, Sweden, Finland and other Baltic States. His visit, is a business one. and he is accompanied bv Mr. C. Dahl, of Palmerston North. They are representing the National Dairy Association. and their visit is in connection with its interests. They are proposing to visit Copenhagen, returning to London after a few days in Denmark. They will probably remain then in England for a couple of months, and when the warmer weather comes, return to Denmark and from there visit the Baltic States.
