NO WATER
——-—■»- TROUBLE IN AIR VALVE. REPAIRS BEING ERECTED. A waterlogged ball in one of the air valves in the pipe-line this morning caused the water pressure in Hawera to drop to about- 5 lbs, but the trouble was quickly located by the borough engineer, Mr. J. Sturrock, and the borough foreman.,. Mr. Sayers, with the result that repairs will halve been effected by about 2 p.m. this afternoon. The drop in the. pressure was noticed in Hawera at about 9 a.m. this morning, and by 10 a.m. the cause had been discovered' near the Waingongora pip 4 e bridge, about 4 miles out of town, and the water turned off in order that the faulty ball might be replaced. The borough engineer drew a Star reporter’s attention to the fact that the water had been cut off on the previous day, and he said that, as frequently happens when the pressure is turned on again after being at zero faults in the pipe-line begin to show themselves, in trie present case the ball in tile air valve had dropped with the turning off of the water, and, being waterlogged, had failed to rise again when the rush of water came through the pipes. The. log-book at the Hawera fire station records the pressure as follows: — May I, 6.30 p.m., no water; 5 p.m., 10 ibs; 9 p.m., 35 lbs; May 2nd, 9 a.m. 5 lbs; 10 a.hi., bo water.
