A PRETTY DISPLAY.
The display of blooms fluid cut flowers, and the decorative section stageil, at the annual flower show, organised: by the ladies of the Presbyterian Missionary Society in Hawera, makes one of the prettiest shows ever seen in Hawera.. The gorgeous autumn, tints naturally preponderate, and these make for a richness and warmth of colour which are very pleasing to the eye and make the hall looklike one big garden, profuse in all kinds of flowers.
Perhaps the out,stand rug ferature of the whole show i-s the display of chrysanthemums from the garden of Mr. R. A. Douglas. The judge (Mr. C. Goodson) was very complimentary to the exhibitor-grower, and said that some of the blooms would take a lot. of beating in any company.
The decorated tables and man celpieces, too, were more than usually artistic and indicated a blending of colour and taste in arrangement which appealed very strongly to the judge (Miss Dingle). One was very pleated with the exhibits.. There, were also other varieties v 6f decorative'work. The fruit, vegetables and cooking were also very good, though not numerous. The judges were Mesdames Gould, R. Tail and. Trotter.
Stalls for (1) work, (2) produce, (3) sweets, and (4) cakes have been arranged, and all did good business. The todies in charge are: (1) Mesdaines Trotter (convenor), Hodge, P'hin, Gould, Pierce, R. Tait; (2) Me--dames . Parkes (convenor), Dillon, Bourke, Me'Neely and Miss Bischofi ; (8) Mesdames Bradford (convenor), McCormick, Sellar; (4) Mesdames Spratt (convenor), Buiwt, T Tait and Miss Syrnc. The ladies in charge of afternoon tea arrangements are: Mesdames J. Hicks, M. J. Campbell and W. Spence. The hon. secretary (Mrs. A. Thomson) had everything in fine order and arrangements well made; and was aibly assisted by Airs’. Bright and Airs. A. Hunter. The judging was completed in good time, and the awards were ,as follow: Chrysanthemums'; pink, white, yellow, brown, three in-curved and outcurved. —Mr. Rt. A. Dongla.s. His bloom, to which was awarded the championship, was a very beautiful white speci men. Collection, six (non-prize).—Miss R. Pierce 1, Miss K. Pierce 2 (winner previously). DECORATED SECTION. Hobb® 1, Mrs. Foyster 2. Decorated hat, a. nice hat made out of autumn leaves. Collection cut blooms.—Airs. Creseey 1, Mrs. Hunter 2. COOKING. Sponge sandwich. —Airs. T. Tait 1, Miss Pierce 2. Family cake.—Afire. R. Bullock 1, Mrs. Peacock 2. Scones (3). —Aire. H. J. Bourke 1, Miss Ei. Lander 2. Collection of sweets. —Miss Stewart 1. FRUIT AND VEGETABLES. Cooking apples.—Airs. Thomson 1. Dessert apples.—Airs. Thomson 1. Collection vegetables.—A. Gould 1, All-. Badcock 2. The .show was formally opened at 2 o’clock tov His Worship the Mayor (Mr, L. A. Bone). Business was then commenced and continued brisk ail the afternoon. THIS EVENING. There will he an .interesting programme of musical .selections this evening in the ball, beginning at 5.15 p.m.
