CARTERTON, April 29. t An anonymous donor has given a cheque for £230 to the Borough Council for the purpose of providing swings, chutes, etc., for a childrens’ playing area in Carrington Park. FALSE INCOME TAX RETURNS. CHRISTCHURCH, April 29. Robert D. Beniamin, a builder of Christchurch,' was fined £250 by the Magistrate this morning on five charges of making false income tax returns, and failing to make returns ns required. The prosecution said it was a grave case, and instanced that in 1921, tax actually paid was £lB when it should have been £1259. ALLEGED THEFT. PALMERSTON N„ April 29. A young man named Denholm Gillespie was charged at the Police Court with stealing £73 from the person of Stanley Gibson. He was remanded till Friday. It was alleged that the accused was one of a party who worked a confidence I,rick on the Esplanade in February and later disappeared to Australia. The accused'was sent hack to the Dominion from the Commonwealth and was arf rested on arrival of the Ulimaroa at Wellington.
