MANGATOKI
THE RETIRING POSTMASTER. RESIDENTS EXTEND BEST WISHES.. Evidence of the wide esteem which Mr. J. Maxwell, of Mangatoki, lias earned during the twenty odd years in which lie has officiated as postmaster was given this morning when, on the eve of his departure, for New* Plymouth, a deputation waited upon Mr. Maxwell at bis residence to express the regret felt by district residents concerning ‘his departure, and to wish him. success in, bis new sphere. The deputation was headed by Mr. Jacob Marx, who said the people of the district would have liked to arrange some more imposing function but, in view of Mr. Maxwell’s 'delicate health, that had been deemed inadvisable. During the yeans that Mr. Maxwell had acted ais postmaster much important work had, gone through, the office, and Mr. Maxwell’s courtesy and efficiency had been unfailing. In his work he had been ably assisted by Mrs.Maxwell, who had been prominent also in the social life of the district. Mr. Marx intimated that a pair of easy chairs was being prerented to Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell from the-Mangatoki residents, and would be delivered to! their new home. He hoped Mr. Maxwell's health would soon be restored, and that all prosperity and happiness would await him and his wife in New Plymouth. Similar sentiments were expressed by Merasira. E. H. Reeve, manager of the Mangatoki Dairy Company, R. D. Douglas, secretary, and J. P. Marx. Mr. Maxwell expressed his appreciation of the kind words spoken, and thanked the donors lor their* handsome fjift. He staid that he wais exceedingly sorry to have to leave a circle of such sincere friends, among whom his life and duties had always lieen attended with pleasure.
