(Notes bv .Maecenas.) Old Surveyor was very amir at the Avondale meeting and would not- face the barrier. Asi this great performer has bad, a. lot of racing- since Christm, ais lie may be in need of a well-earned spell. . .. .Sa.fidstar further enhanced his reputation oil the second day of the, Avondale meeting by decisively' winning the Autumn Handicap. Sand star is a very promising colt, but the baicl rum Hipo received on Monday made bis task much'easier. . ....... A very promising maiden performer in Bright. Sol made bin appearance, at the Avondale meeting, but just faffed to get on the winning list. Unfortunately bis tendons are. somewhat weak, but if he stands, a preparation lie will wi,n, races. Bright Sol is nominated for the* Hamilton meeting. It is stated oiti reliable, authority that Royal Blood,- Runpnpa. and Stand star will be taken over ;tn Ali'.sbralia, to race. If turned out at their best by Trainer W. Kirk, the trio should at least pay expenses,, ais they are much hotter than the average performer. lit, is claimed .that- things generally are quiet- in. Auckland., but despite the report the Avondale Jockey Club put over twenty thousand pounds more through its *to tali sators. The Woodi-ill* trained Clhrihda tan a, very good race ,at Avondale,, but on the other hand her si able-m ate Oli'a.ndhui performed badly. 'flie Australian bred Erne won eai-ily at the recent Auckland meeting, and was bailed as extra good, but, when backed down to- a very short price at Avondale Erne failed, badly..
Quite a number of Steeplechasers are being raced into condition this season, and it looks as if the early winter “cross country” races will be harder to win than is usually the case. The Hat racing season i-5 rapidly clraiwiiiig to a chase, ami in, a couple pi. weeks we will have the jumping with us. As usual, one i-s often 'ashed. Where are our “cliayers’’ c cihi hg fromf When, the time, arrives they will be as* .numerous, as of yore. After being off the ..scene.,for a, time, Ruapliipat was a, runner in the Waitakerei Handicap. He looked roinini kiddy well, but was mot knocked about by his rider. If. a, runner at the Hiainjllton meeting Ruapapa may do better. Sir Rosebery was responsible for a. good performance, when lie won the jumping event ait Avondale on Monday Hast. Owner-trainer Garrett has the gelding very forward, and lie is certain to play bis, part well in the, big steeplechases ahead. When the two-year-old Nucleus, beat the well-backed Dal Eaton, at Avondale she paid well over a quarter of a century. Trainer Fred Davis put up 9 lbs overweight to- secure L Pine for Nucleus. In Dan Quin, Gay Comet and King Pot. the ex-Taranaki trainer H. Eva, has a very useful trio. AIW three ran well at Avondale, but Dan. Quin was the only one to win a. race. Possibly the better course of the Hamilton Racine C'iujb may suit King Pot and King Quin better. The Hamilton, Racing Club will race mi Tuesday arid Thursday next. Owing to the delay in the issuing of the additional permits, clubs favoured with them a,re experiencing di Hindi ty in securing suitable elates, hence, for this season, such clu’bP expect to- have “lean” meetings. On the first day of the Avondale meeting Rlafa was paying in tife, vicinity of a. “fiver.” He was one of the last to find bis feet, .ami galloped in the rear throughout. The second day there ivti~i a, .stampede to hack; the big bladlt g-elding, -which, jumping on? ih front, iVcti with ridiculous ease and re*
turned a, big army of backers consult rs.'hly les'Si than even money. Hor.-iesi ridden, by H. Gray are usua.li;. wdll placed during the running of i:u-e----and finely meet with much interior once. However thisCiiinnot he sai.l r,/ llipo in the chief handicap run a: Avondale on Monday, as in that even; H,ipo struck -a- lost of trouble and w;v seiiit hack the last fo-uir furlongs Iron, h.oime. Hipo put in a wonderful inr over the bust two furlong-, hut the tu-i wac. hevotiid him.
