COMMISSIONER OF TAXES.

RETIRING ON SUPERANNUATION. AN ABLE OFFICER. (By Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, April 16. Mr Donald George Clark, C.8.E., Commissioner of Taxes, will be retiring on superannuation, shortly. Mr Clark is one of the best-known men in the Civil Service, and one of the most highly esteemed, both for his many esteemed personal qualities and for liis great ability and authoritative knowledge on ail taxation questions. He was born in Wellington, and he joined the Property Tax Department in 1885. In 1901 he was appointed inspector in the Land and Income Tax Department, and in 1913 he became Deputy Commissioner of Taxbs. The following year he was appointed Commissioner, and has held that position with distinction ever since. For his services during the war Mr Clark was awarded the 0.8. E., and last year was raised to C.B.E. As the government’s'officer at Christchurch Exhibition in 1906, Mr Clark did a considerable amount of good work.

When the Estimates were under consideration during last session of Parliament highly eulogistic references were made to Mr Clark’s work for the State, and a suitable recognition of his services was made bv the House on 'a proposal submitted by the Leader of the Opposition, and cordially endorsed by the Prime Minister.
