In the course of a speech at. Melbourne, the Minister for Defence said he did not believe that 50 per cent, of the men in Australia between the ages of 19 and 40 were medically fit to carry on the defence of their country. At a large gathering of representatives of dairy factories throughout the Wairarapa. and Bush districts, held at Carterton on Thursday, the Wairarapa Federated Dairies' Association was formed. It is understood that the association is modelled on the lines, of the Factories’ Federation in this district.
A Press Association message from Melbourne states that at the inquest in connection with the level crossing smash at Highett, the coroner committed W. Resuggan, gatekeeper, for trial on a charge of manslaughter, stating that the accident was caused by his criminal neglect.
Mrs Evans, of Tasman street, Wellington, was knocked down by a motor car at the corner of Manners and Taranaki streets yesterday afternoon, and was gravely injured (says a Wellington Press Association message). The car afterwards crashed into a lorry, and was badly smashed. The driver was a woman.
Mr. C. Olsen, of Eltham aged about 80, received a most painful and serious injury on Thursday afternoon, says the Argus, by breaking his left thigh when he slipped. He was staying at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Towers, Castle Street, and when in his bedroom he slipped. In the fall to the floor his left thigh was broken. Inquiry at the hospital this, morning showed that the patient was progressing as well as could he expected.
The annual conference of the New Zealand Dental Association ended yesterday at Auckland with a series of clinics covering a wide range of. subjects. The lecturers were Dr. H. A. Chatfield, D.D.S., Messrs R. L. Johnston and J. H. Mac Kay (Auckland), and A. H. Boys (Wanganui). Members of the conference and their wives were the guests of the president of the association (Mr C. H. Moses) at an at home at Ellerslie racecourse in the afternoon. At Kaponga Methodist Church tomorrow the Rev. A. Blakemore will inaugurate his ministry in the circuit.
