THE SMILE CASTLE

A CORNER ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN.

THE CASTLE PLEDGE.

I promise to smile every timq I can, -and to chase all the frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness. No*w, my playmates, — Although it is a cold night, I am not allowing any of you to sit bv the fire. We shall get warm in a better way. Ready? Take a partner. Gwen and Norman Chadwick are to lead off skipping round the room, and you must all sing “John Brown’s Body,” Hurry! I have a bunch of keys in my hand. When I drop them, you must rush for a seat. The last one to sit takes my place in the centra with the km*, an 1 in his turn sees who is the slowest to find a. seat. Go! Who is cold after that romp? The fire will warm the air while you arc sitting still, but. exercise is best. It makes the blood run freely through your veins and arteries. Of course you must have .clean fresh air coming into your lungs to purify that blood supply, so, no stuffy rooms. Then, when you are healthy, you should be happy, and your rosy cheeks will make you look prettier, too. Girls, do you hear that? When you °-o back to your own homes from your Saturday nights at the Castle, just try to remember some of these things. .-My children must be best in all things. So, when you feel cold, take exercise, or do some work for mother. I have some little friends in a .colder country than this, who, when they have finished their home-work, go for a quick walk round the block before they go to bed. I’ve, had such a lovely Easter surprise. It came on Monday morning. Not one of you can guess. It came, from Gwen Chadwick, and I think her brother Norman brought it to the Star Office. Our giant, who happened to be busy near by, said he saw a Smile Castle boy near the office with a parcel. Was it you, Norman? What was in it? No, no, no, none of those things. Yes, a doll, dressed fin pink in a pretty little cradle draped in pink Voile, with a pink bow on top of it. Nor was that all. There was a lovely to Y rabbit I think Gwen must have stuffed it and worked it all herself. These are the first offerings for our Gift Cupboard, and Gwen has the honour of being the first one. to have made anything. Thank you ever so much, Gwen. Who will be next? People who do things without talking about, it for a long time first are best. Someone wants to have S.C. put on all we make. I think not. When we send our parcel at Christmas time we shall put a card in to say that it all came from the Smiles. That should do. I wish to draw your attention to a letter from Jack Beamish and an. advertisement on the notice board. I think boys must be made of more than “frogs and snails and puppj dogs’ tails.’’

Our older children who go to secondary schools will all be feeling very happy this week. Back again at last to school! You must have felt specially happy last Wednesday. You’ll be able to work ever so much better after this long rest. We hope you are all successful through the year. Next Saturdav, April 25, is Anzae Day. There is no need for me to explain what this day means. You all know. As we shall hold it as a Sunday, in/memory of those gallant lives so nobly laid down, we shall not meet at Smile Castle on that evening, but on Friday, April 24. v You will notice we have still a few additions to make to our family. We are still making discoveries. By trying, some folk have been able, to make quite good verse. I wonder who could write the best imaginative essay on “Dreams.’’ Your loving, , • SMILE QUEEN.
