FERRY STEAMER’S ROUGH TRIP
RECORD RAINFALL REGISTERED
(by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION J CHRISTCHURCH, April 17. The storm which swept Canterbury yesterday was still raging to-dav, although the wind had abated slightly. The ferry steamer encountered huge, seas south of Cane Campbell, and some of the 400 passengers had a bad time, although the vessel slowed down. She. arrived at 9.30 a.m. Storm damage includes a fall of 200 tons of clay on the Lyttelton-Sumner road. Christchurch escaped the heavy damage, but on Ferry road, near Manning’s brewery, the water was a foot deep over the footpath. Railway communication with Little River is now cut off. The rainfall for the 24 hours ending 9.30 a.m. was 4.711, a record for Canterbury.
