CASE FOR MARAMA’S FIREMEN

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT

Received April 17, 10.15 a.m. Sl'Di\El', April 17

The shipipng dispute has assumed a more -serious aspect. Besides tiie Painters’ and DecKers’ Union refusing to work on the Voiumnia, the Woolwich dock transport group lias again declared the ICromanga “black.” seamen’s Union otncia's aie stated to have offered to supply men for the Mnrama, provided they are guaranteed a month’s pay, but the company is not prepared to accept the demand. Mr Beach, the Firemen s Union delegate on the Maraina, has issued a statement explaining the position ot tbe firemen. He says the whole trouble was due to the published statements that it was the intention of the company to lay the vessel up indefinitely when she leached Wellington. This means that five members ot me Federation would, upon arrival in New Zealand, be obliged to return to Australia and then look for fresh employment here with only five days’ discharge to show. He (joints out that the conduct o«f the firemen on the Marania has been at l that might be desired. An inspection of the official log shows that, many have been associated with the vessel since it has been in commission. Il the five vacancies can be filled the firemen are ready to take the vessel to sea at a minute’s notice.
