In his opening remarks the chairman referred to the work done in the past year, during which time the hall had been enlarged and improved, and was now one of the best halls in the district. A most successful carnival had been held, as a result of which some £312 odd ’ had been raised. This was not quite sufficient for the purposes of the society, but arrangements had been made with the bank by whicii an overdraft had been given to a certain amount, and it was up to them this year to wipe that off, which, considering that the ordinary revenue oi the society outside of the carnival money was nearly £65, should not present anv very great difficulty. During the past year five new members had joined and paid their subscriptions. During the year a most successful plain and fancy masquerade ball was held, and he hoped that success would attend the sdciety’s efforts this year also. . The secretary then produced the bal-ance-sheet, showing receipts amounting to £392 4s 6d, and expenditure £435 Os 2d, leaving a debit balance oi the year’s working of £42 15s Bd. On the election of officers Mr. Webby declined re-nomination as president owing to pressure of private business' and Messrs W. Hey, J. A. Symes, and J. Gibson were nominated. A ballot resulted in Hr. Mr. Mills also moved a vote oi thanks to the secretary, and Mr Webbv seconded, and this was also carried with acclamation. Mr Youllaire replied, thanking members for their appreciation. Some discussion took place as to the best means to raise funds during the. yea,r for the purpose of paying off the society’s liability, and it was decided to, open the season with a grand plain and fancy masquerade, ball on Thursday, May 7, and to call a ladies’ meeting on Wednesday next, 22nd mst., to make arrangements re supper, and Mi J. Gibson was appointed to canvass the bachelors for assistance in the mattei of fruit salads, etc. It was resolved that price for admission be gents 4s and ladies 2s. GENERAL. The milk supply continues to fall, and the factory ‘is now only turning out aboilt 31 cheeses per day. Tests are rising slowly, and now range between 3.8 and 5.5. In a. couple, ol' weeks no doubt some cows wi'l be going on to once a day, and the supply will then fall very rapidly. PERSONAL. Two of our local young ladies, Misses Marnie Webby and Edith Hey, who gained their proiic-iancy certificates ai last examinations, departed on Tuesday for New Plymouth, where they a,re continuing their studies at the Girls’ High School. I wish both pf them a happy and successful time there, and have no doubt they wi'l do well.
