SOLDIER SETTLERS.
ADVANCES ACCOUNT
AILSCONCEPTiON CORRECTED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Star).
WELLINGTON, April 15
A misconception arising from the reported utterance ot . the. ‘Minister for liands, the . Hon.; Mr A. D. McLeod, on ins...recent East. Coast .trip regarding stock advances for returned soldier settlers, was corrected by Mr MeEeotl to-day.. Vine report,” ,s.aid the Minister, "is incorrect in one very important particular. It- credits me „with saying at Ruatorea that legist a tic.ii had been introduced whereby advances made on stock- would be written into the* ~apital value. Obviously. this, could not be done. I discussed the point with returned -soldier settlers on several occasions during, my rece.nt- .visit to the East- Coast, and 1 expressed the opinion that it was most unsatisfactory to luive advances on stock and for permanent improvements placed m one account, and that 1 hail : introduced ’legislation whereby the Department would be able to -capitalise oi; secure by a table of moitgages the existing value of (he permanent, improvements effected with the advances made under the Discharged Soldiers’. Settlement Act. Such an arrangement would not only facilitate maters for the Department, but wou’d enable soldier settlers more readily to tiansfer their stock and chattel business to mercantile firms if they so desired. Full particulars in regard to current accounts were now being prepared by the district officers, and as soon as the. Dominion Revaluation Board has concluded its work with .respect to the valuation of land he'd by returned soldiers, the question of readjusting current accounts is to be proceeded with.”
