REPUBLICANS DEMONSTRATE.
IN OPPOSITION TO- HINDENBURG
THE DANGERS AHEAD. IF EX-WAR LORD IS ELECTED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCI ATipN—COPYRIGHT. Received Anril 15, 12.55 p.m. 'BERLIN, April 14. Forty thousand republicans demonstrated at Hamburg as a counterblast to Hindenbnrg’s nomination. There was another great gathering at Breslau, where Hoe be, the Socialist president of the Reichstag, said that the nomination of Hindenburg was a crime against the man whom all Germans lion on red and esteemed. Either Hindenburg would fail,, and then >be dragged into a party feud and lose his nimbus, or lie would achieve a monarchist victory, in. which case, though considering himself bound by his oath to the Kaiser, lie would have to swear he would safeguard tlie republic. But when the first political crisis arises, Hindenburg, inexperienced and ignorant of political matters, would shatter what lias been accomplished in the direction of the pacification of Germany, or shatter his own reputation as a strong hero.—Aus.-N.Z.
